First post

For 2021 Pi Wars is online. Attempts at the challenges are to be videoed and submitted by Friday 5th March... which gives me about 4 months to build a rubbut small enough to join in, and film it trying to compete. The rubbut has to be 300x225. I've measured up all the things I've got lying around and they are all a little bit too wide, like the old RW featherweight which is about 400mm x 400mm... and has a big axe. Or too weedy like the little antweight things which are all under 150g and fit into a 100mm cube, so are going to have troubles with golf balls. Binbot is a likely candidate as he's driven by a Jetson nano at the minute, so could switch to Ras Pi power relatively easily.. but he only just squeezes into the purple box... sideways. Still might be worth asking as he does squeak in under the max height of 370mm. Or I might just build something new.

Decsions

I thought it might be useful to try and record the some of the the build process for shedbot, I remember 20 years ago when we were trying to build robots for the Original series of Robot wars that any video of the build process was valuable. Maybe more so these days? I'll see if I can dig out some video we did with the Discovery Channel around the build process back then. If only to see a very much younger version of me.

Shedbot chassis build

I bought some angle steel from Wickes, cut it to size and welded it up. I've fixed the motors in place and tested it with a couple of cheap RC speed controllers at 11.48v. It works, it's not super quick but probably fast enough to get around the tiny PiWars arena. The current set up doesn't make any use of the mecanum feature which requires a little more complex motor control, easy enough to code, but not so easy to test with just a two channel RC setup. I've put the wheels on in the correct orientation (the lobes point to the centre from each axle) and weighed the setup... 1.3Kg
